1932 Girard-Marx Joy Line Flyer In Original Box

1932 Girard-Marx Joy Line Flyer In Original Box

Superb five piece clockwork Joy Line Flyer train set with original key and track. This set was an in-house sample auctioned by Ted Maurer Auctioneers in 1977 when all remaining Marx toy stock was dispersed to the public. However, it has no documented provenance. Consists of a cast iron locomotive with four tin litho cars in its original box, with inserts, and instruction sheet. All are marked Girard Model Wks.

The set was originally produced under a five year selling contract with Louis Marx. Signed in 1929, the Marx trademark did not appear on products produced at the Girard. PA plant until 1935; one year after The Girard Model Wks. Inc. went into bankruptcy. Marx became a majority stockholder of Girard in 1933.

The set includes the following:

  • No. 102 Cast iron locomotive (6") manufactured in 1930. Features enclosed (clockwork) governor with ringing bell. Designed with considerable detail it has a working rear brake lever, stamped eight-spoked flanged wheels, a slip over key with square shaft, and removable steel encased clockwork motor. It comes with a green painted key which is probably not original to the set, but was inside the box.
  • No. 351 Tin litho tender (3½") with flanged metal wheels, embossed coal pile, steps on frame front, and heavy gauge couplers
  • No. 357 Three embossed tin litho "The Joy Line Coach" cars (4½") with green body, black exterior detail, embossed die cut windows, flanged metal wheels, and heavy gauge couplers.
  • Four curved 12" Joy Line track sections. Completes a circle with approximately 20" diameter when assembled.
  • Original box cover and box bottom.
  • All four original cardboard inserts.
  • Girard instructions.

Size: Box 15" x 11" x 2½".
